Search Engine Optimization

“If your advertising goes unnoticed, everything else is academic.”
William Bernbach, legendary figure in the history of American advertising (1911-1982)

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, refers to the art and science behind everything we do to ensure that your site is found by the search engine spiders and ranked highly for maximum visibility. It is all about being noticed, being recognized. It is one of the key services offered by AcuteVisibility|BMO.

Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) are what you see when you enter a query into a search engine like Google, Bing or Yahoo. The SERP listings are called “organic” search results, because they happen naturally – they aren’t paid for. Of course, they’re not entirely natural, since a lot goes into making them happen! It takes a concentrated effort to make sure the search engines find your website, and recognize your content as relevant.

Search Engine Optimization is comprised of both Onsite SEO and Offsite SEO tactics, as well as Social Media Optimization.

Onsite SEO

We work with each client to define the most effective keyword phrases to target. We develop keyword-rich site content and sculpt the site with anchor text. And we implement Title tags, Meta tags, Meta keywords and Alt tags throughout the site to maximize the sites visibility with search engine spiders.

Additional content may be warranted to enrich the keyword density across the site. This can be in the form of articles, blogs, newsletter archives, press releases, testimonials, case studies, white papers, schedules and calendars, photographs with descriptions, etc. Whatever is relevant and rich in content will be an asset on the site.

And once implemented, content needs to be continually updated and refreshed. You need to give users a reason to return to your site. This constant stream of traffic and new content tells the search engines that you’ve got a living, breathing site that is being tended to and interacted with.

Onsite SEO also includes ensuring that all internal links and online forms are fully functioning, e.g. no “broken” links or 404 pages, no “Page Not Found” displays.

Offsite SEO

Once the onsite SEO has been implemented, there are a number of offsite SEO activities that need to be initiated. Offsite Search Engine Optimization includes all efforts related to driving organic (i.e. unpaid) back to your site.

First, the site is submitted into all the basic search engines. Next, you want to find any and all relevant business and local directories. Some of these directories will charge a small one-time or annual fee. Directory submissions take between 1 day and 90 days to go live, and all should be revisited periodically.

Next, you should start working on obtaining backlinks to your site. Backlinks from other websites are critical to your website’s success, both as a means of driving traffic, and maximizing your site rank. A proactive link building strategy involves identifying compatible sites to obtain one way links, reciprocal links and three-way links. Ideally, you want to be linked with sites that contain only the highest-quality relevant content.

Social Media Optimization

“The Internet offers an interesting combination of advertising and community.
By participating in the community you can become an advertisement for yourself.”
Walter Jon Williams, contemporary American writer

Social Media Optimization — or SMO — is another critical component of SEO. It includes lots of different elements, including blogging, micro-blogging or "tweeting" on Twitter, participating in forums, and developing brand presence in online communities such as LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace.

As part of an integrated organic search strategy, these SMO efforts provide an effective medium for communicating company news, product information and knowledge leadership. In addition to driving targeted traffic directly to your site, the keyword-rich content of these venues can be optimized to rank well with the major search engines.

However, you must be committed to the ongoing “care and feeding” of the Social Media “beast.” It’s counter-productive to start a Blog and not post to it regularly. It’s equally ineffective to create online community groups and profiles and not monitor them or participate. At best, you’ve wasted your time. At worst, you can seriously damage your brand.

Putting It All Together

SEO takes time to really take effect — it simply doesn’t happen overnight. The search engine spiders only track sites every 60-90 days, and their algorithms are constantly changing. You need to keep updating content and developing new sources of traffic, as well as revisiting your keyword strategy regularly. If you ignore your website, it will die a slow and sad death. But with a little bit of constant tending, your site can be the most valuable asset in your marketing arsenal.

That's where AcuteVisibility|BMO comes in.  We'll provide constant care and attention to keep your site optimized both onsite and offsite.  And we can take over your entire Social Media presence, from tweets to forums.
