Choosing the right domain name is a critical factor in optimizing your brand and supporting your image. You probably already have a name for your business, but to have an online presence, you need to secure an appropriate and memorable domain name (www.yourdomain.com.)

If your business name is Cha-Cha Chocolates, you don’t want to get stuck with a domain name like Jones.com or BrownStuff.biz. You want a domain that extends your branding effort. Something like ChaChaChox.com.

Considerations in selecting a domain name:

Keep it short and simple.

Go for a “.com” extension if it’s available (and appropriate for your business entity.)

Buy up all the relevant extensions available (e.g. .net, .info, .org and .us.) Bear in mind that some top level domain extensions (TLDs) have strict guidelines as to qualifications. So you may not be able to qualify for all the extensions, but you probably still want to try and secure them so no one else can use them.

Make sure your domain supports your branding.
